The Nest—New Student Magazine
This project was a new initiative for The Nest, a New Student Magazine distributed at the beginning of each semester and updated annually. Its purpose is to foster a sense of community by sharing current students’ stories and offering a glimpse into life at the University of Utah. Through these stories, the student body welcomes the next generation, helping new students feel at home as they begin their college journey. The magazine is filled with helpful information and designed to serve as a student’s “basecamp,” tying into our overarching brand theme of exploration and adventure.
To bring The Nest to life, I introduced a clear type hierarchy and strategic callouts to ensure consistency and give the piece the polished feel of a true magazine. Bold Utah Red headers highlight key topics and stand out against a more muted color palette, drawing readers’ attention where it matters most. Articles are connected with dotted lines, visually guiding the reader from one story to the next and reinforcing the theme of maps and exploration.
The design further emphasizes student life at the U with imagery of outdoor recreation and active engagement, celebrating our close connection to the great outdoors. Ornamental mountain and ridge graphics tie the design to our brand’s identity, colors, and Utah’s iconic landscape. The magazine closes with a final nod to our mission: the “Geared to Rise” logo, reminding students that at the University of Utah, they have the tools and support to reach their highest potential.
